Our stay of the week – El Palauet Living Barcelona

Housed in a beautiful early 20th-century mansion on one of the best streets in the Catalan capital, El Palauet Living Barcelona is the kind of place you’ll want to spend your whole summer in. A masterpiece of design by native architect Pere Falqués, the listed building has been lovingly restored to its original glory. Stained glass windows, intricate ironwork, ornate cornicing, high ceilings and an elegantly carved wooden staircase are the backdrop for a highly sophisticated mash-up of styles.

From Baroque to Modernisme – a medley of iconic aesthetics give this little black book address its unique character, and the generous square-footage in each of its six apartment-style suites will give you wondrous space to take it all in. In a totally Zen palette of neutrals that Farrow and Ball themselves would lust over, the creatives behind El Palauet Living let the incredible lines, curves, textures and craftsmanship do the talking.

Not simply a treat for design aficionados but an impressively functional collection, the suites comprise living and work areas, a dining room, fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms, enough high-tech features to placate even the most discerning gadget geeks, a concierge service, plus balconies with privileged views of the grand Passeig de Gràcia’s plethora of boutiques. Well-chosen pieces by the likes of Philippe Starck and Antonio Citterio work exquisitely with original details such as the fresco ceilings – protected by the Town Hall of Barcelona.

Up on the rooftop, there’s a smart private spa that’s not open to the public. Take an hour or two out to relax in the Jacuzzi, chill-out area, solarium or Finnish sauna. There’s no restaurant, but hey, with the restaurants of the urbane Eixample quarter (also home to the much-photographed Sagrada Familia) on your doorstep, who’s complaining. Plus, you’ll have plenty of room to serve your own pintxos at your lovely ice-white dining table…
