Our stay of the week – Bela Vista Hotel & Spa, Algarve

Design aficionados, hold onto your hats. This striking five-star property may be called ‘Bela Vista’, but with interiors this good, you could easily forget to admire the uninterrupted ocean views.

A private, turn-of-the-century house that became the Algarve’s first hotel; Bela Vista Hotel & Spa is one of the region’s most iconic stays. Today, the building remains in the same Portuguese family that first lived here before its opening in 1934, and the hotel is a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux collection. A winning combination of boutique character and dependably high R&C standards.

Its situation on the broad golden sands of Praia da Rocha makes it perfect for a relaxing beach holiday – especially either side of peak season when only a modest number of tourists are around. Even in the height of summer, you certainly won’t get the feeling that half of Europe has descended on the hotel’s lobby; there are just 38 rooms dispersed through the main house and the villas, and an abundance of space. No jostling at the bar; no need to unleash silent hell on a sun lounger-hogger.

The joy of Bela Vista is the cacophony of themes. Acclaimed designer Graça Viterbo is the creative behind the hotel’s most recent refresh, which saw modern brights and unique avant-garde furnishings set against the backdrop of exquisite original features. There’s an around-the-world vibe to the Moorish shapes and Miami-style sense of fun, while the nautical blue stripes and beautiful tiles rein the look back to Faro.

A sample of L’Occitane goodies in the bathroom are a tempting nod to the on-site spa, owned by the same French brand. As well as massage treatments, an array of thermal facilities will have that Atlantic nip melted away in no time. Elsewhere within the grounds, you’ll find a chic outdoor pool where a bartender is on hand to pour cocktails while you recline. And when hunger strikes, there’s an open-air dining terrace where you can gorge on elegant Portuguese cuisine by chef Rogério Calhau. All this in under a three-hour flight from London? See you there…
