Our stay of the week – Lake Placid Lodge, New York

For a truly different all-American escape, try a serene Lake Placid stay at a luxurious Relais & Châteaux property in the Adirondacks. The Arts and Crafts-style Lake Placid Lodge is the perfect place to rest up, thanks to its wide porches, wine cellar and hand-laid stone hearths – 50, to be exact. Once a Gilded Age great camp, the 2015 Travel + Leisure World’s Best and Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice awardee has lost nothing in hospitality since then, and because the staff takes care of everything, you may as well relax – whether by the fire or on the waterfront.

Lodge cabins and suites at Lake Placid Lodge are the picture of rustic comfort, each with diamond-paned windows and its own individual design. Split among the Main Lodge, the Lakeside Building and separate spots on the shores of the lake, they offer thick walls and fire-lit interiors, huge windows framing the lake, and a porch or terrace where you can kick back and relax in style. They also have sumptuous bathrooms; expect special details like twigs curving over soaking tubs and walk-in showers with glass doors.

Lake Placid Lodge offers plenty to please on the dining front, with contemporary, locally sourced fare on hand at Artisans Restaurant. Other hearty eats are available at Maggie’s Pub, a wood-panelled tavern with a billiards table, offering salads, sliders, club sandwiches, and cheese and charcuterie plates. Don’t forget to start a day wrapped up in a blanket on the lake- and mountain-view terrace, feasting on the famous pancakes, which Travel + Leisure voted among the top 10 in the country.

The surrounding two-time Olympic city is known for being an international sports capital (and not only in winter, either), so don’t just sit around, gazing at Whiteface’s reflection in the still waters. Get up and have an adventure – whether skiing that mountain, or trying canoeing, fishing or tennis in warmer weather. Year-round, there’s an Olympic museum to see, plus the acclaimed Wild Center. Just don’t stay out past evening – that’s when Lake Placid Lodge hosts its daily bonfire and marshmallow roast.

We’re offering a stay in a Lakeview or Lakefront cabin from £148 per person, per night, on a room-only basis.
