Our stay of the week – Nyala Safari Lodge, South Africa

The Mohlabetsi River’s name translates as ‘sweet waters’, an appropriate name considering the sublime views of its leisurely babbling currents from Nyala Safari Lodge, located on a private game reserve in Kruger National Park. Grab your khaki jacket and binoculars for twice-daily game drives, sinfully good bush dinners and restful slumbers in traditional rondavels with charming thatched roofs.

Just 40 minutes’ drive from the town of Hoedspruit you’ll find yourself immersed in the bush, with animals all around and your chance to spot some of Africa’s ‘big five’ right from the terrace – the lodge overlooks a watering hole where many animals stop by for a drink. Expert safari guides will take you out into the reserve to seek out elephants, rhinoceros, lion and leopard from the comfort of open-sided 4WD vehicles, designed to fully immerse yourself in the surroundings.

When you’ve finished exploring for the day, head back to the lodge to enjoy a dip in the petite swimming pool lined with loungers. Alternatively, luxuriate in the cloud-like bed and freestanding bathtub of your refurbished and beautifully-designed suite – a chalet-style rondavel that’s designed to be perfectly cool in the summer and toasty in the winter, with fabrics and curios inspired by the culture of the local Shangaan people.

On the dining front, you could sample the flavours of the plains with sumptuous breakfast spreads to prepare you for your game drives and hearty bush dinners. You can dine inside but we’d opt to eat al fresco, under South Africa’s vast, starry skies, listening to the sounds of the bush. Start each evening with drinks around the fire with fellow guests before settling down for a traditional supper cooked over an open fire.

We’re offering a stay in a Luxury suite from £1,899 per person for five nights, on a full-board basis, with flights, transfers, safari game drives and more.
